Today’s Action Tomorrow’s Leaders
Our Program : The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute
The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute-Waco
Recognizing that “broad-based community leadership is critical for long-term, positive community change,” Today’s Action Tomorrow’s Leaders rolled out its first program, The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute-Waco in the fall of 2011.
The program’s goal is to “strengthen the skills of those who hold leadership positions and make civic leadership training available to those who may not [necessarily] consider themselves leaders, but have much to offer their communities.” Created by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change (and now overseen by Civic Change, Inc.), the LeadershipPLENTY® curriculum provides a 10 module course on civic engagement that has been proven effective in communities across the country.
In 2011 and June 2015, Waco Foundation underwrote the training of our roster of 60 certified trainers, all leaders within the greater Waco from a variety of fields, in order to establish The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute in our community. After six rounds of the program, interest in the Institute continues to grow and enrollment has more than doubled, with each class filled to capacity.
LeadershipPLENTY® Institute Curriculum topics include:
• Identifying Community Assets
• Managing Groups for Results
• Making Meetings Work Better
• Managing Conflict
• Moving From Talk to Action
• Valuing Evaluation
• Communicating for Change
• Facing the Challenge of Racism & Race Relations
What is the LeadershipPLENTY® Institute?
The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute-Waco is a transformational leadership development program developed by Civic Change, Inc. for people who are passionate about improving their community and interested in developing and enhancing their leadership skills to become more effective leaders. Today’s Action Tomorrow’s Leaders (“TATL”), a steering committee established through the Community Visioning Project for the purpose of identifying and equipping leaders in the greater Waco area, implemented the program in 2011 and offers it at no cost to individuals who are selected to participate through underwriting support provided by Waco Foundation. TATL believes that the identification and cultivation of effective leadership through the Institute will impact our community and the organizations within it for the better well into the future.
Who is LeadershipPLENTY® for?
The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute is for anyone in the greater Waco area who is interested in developing and enhancing their leadership skills. The goal of the program is to allow participants to hone those skills to equip them to work more effectively and collaboratively within their own community and respective organizations. The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute-Waco was established by TATL to identify and develop leaders who share a passion for improving our community. The skills gained by participants are useful not only in helping to increase awareness of important civic issues, but also serve to develop leaders within both the public and private sectors, as well as within the broader community, while enabling participants to expand and strengthen their own personal networks.
How can you participate in LeadershipPLENTY®?
Individuals must submit an online application to The LeadershipPLENTY® Institute-Waco to be considered for the Institute. One online Reference Form is required to accompany the online application, which can be submitted online or sent via email/mail by at least one person selected by the applicant (additional references can be submitted, but only one is required). The online application can be found here or can be requested by contacting Kasey Ashenfelter, Director of Leadership Development and Engagement at Waco Foundation, at 254.710.6866 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Do I have to be nominated to apply to LeadershipPLENTY®?
No, a nomination is not required to apply. The nomination process simply helps us to identify talented individuals in the community with leadership potential and informs them of the opportunity to apply to the Institute. If you know of someone who could benefit from participation in the Institute, you can nominate them and they will receive an email notification inviting them to apply to The LeadershipPlenty® Institute-Waco.
What is the cost?
There is no cost to participate in the LeadershipPlenty® Institute-Waco. Tuition for participants of the Institute is underwritten by Waco Foundation in order to identify and equip new and previously untapped leaders to serve our community.
What is the commitment?
Participants are expected to attend ten sessions over the course of six months that address ten modules of content and skill development. Sessions are held twice a month from September through February and each session averages four to five hours in length. Separate morning and evening classes are offered the same day to accommodate differing schedules, but participants are required attend the session they are accepted to (preferences are accommodated when possible). Morning sessions are held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and evening sessions are held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Classes are team taught by facilitators who have been trained in the LeadershipPlenty® curriculum and selected for their leadership contributions to the community. While there is not a specific requirement after graduation in March 2019, graduates are encouraged to find opportunities to contribute to their community in a tangible way and/or seek out new opportunities to engage in a civic capacity. It is up to each graduate to determine how they wish to contribute to their community or organization.
